From the bustling kitchen of my grandmother’s house to the serene familiarity of my own home, one enduring tradition has always stood out: the ritual of setting up the table. Growing up in an Indian household, where family ties are tightly woven, this seemingly simple act held profound significance—it was a celebration of togetherness, conversation, and the joy of shared meals.

As children, my cousins and I eagerly participated in laying out the table. Each setting was meticulously arranged with a placemat, a plate, spoon, fork, and glass, waiting in anticipation for the feast to come. It wasn't just about fulfilling a chore; it was about setting the stage for moments that would become cherished memories. The table, dressed with care, became a centerpiece for our family gatherings, a place where stories were exchanged, laughter echoed, and culinary delights were savoured.

There’s a certain nostalgia that tugs at my heartstrings when I think back to those days. It's the aroma of spices mingling with the laughter of loved ones, the clinking of utensils, and the warmth that permeated every mealtime. Even the stains on the placemats bore witness to the joyous chaos of those gatherings, evidence of meals shared and bonds strengthened.

Years later, as I embarked on my journey with Noori Studio, creating a range of mats and napkins became a natural extension of these cherished memories. It wasn’t just about designing products; it was about capturing the essence of those family holidays and festive occasions. Each piece in our collection carries with it the spirit of togetherness and the warmth of shared meals.

In our fast-paced world, where meals are often hurried affairs or relegated to the solitary glow of screens, the act of setting up a table takes on a deeper meaning. It’s a deliberate pause, a moment to reconnect with our roots and savour the simple pleasures of life. Whether it’s a grand celebration or a quiet weekday dinner, laying out the table is a nod to tradition and a tribute to the memories that shape us.

For me, these mats and napkins are more than just items; they are vessels of nostalgia, embodying the spirit of home and the love that permeates every family gathering. They serve as reminders of the days when "home" meant sharing a meal of ‘varan bhaat’, lovingly laid out by my grandmother, mum or myself, where every stain told a story and every setting held a memory.

In essence, the ritual of setting up the table is a timeless tradition that transcends generations. It’s a thread that connects us to our past, anchors us in the present, and promises to weave the fabric of our future gatherings. As I continue to grow Noori Studio, I hope to share this sense of warmth and togetherness with others, inviting them to create their own lasting memories around a table set with love and care.
